With Malice And Forethought, D. Meckanic Released which Examines the Nefarious, Corrupt Activity of Military, Government Personnel in South Africa and Canada

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) July 28, 2006 – With Malice And Forethought -

An Autobiography on Life and Corruption examines the military and political climate in South Africa during the death throws of Apartheid, in the mid to late eighties and how and why companies, educational institutions and government ministers are allowed to commit fraud and evade taxes. This is a non-fiction autobiographical account by a man who has lived in both countries and worked with both of their governments.

The incidents surrounding the oppression of information critical to a governments survival are examined in some detail indicating the distances to which ministers, bureaucrats and military officers will travel to suppress truth regardless of the inherent human loss of life.

Veteran Toronto, Ontario designer-author Dave Meckanic asks “Where does all the truth go after the spin-doctors?”

In his just-released book “With Malice And Forethought – A Novel Based On Real Events,” he chronicles the experiences of a fictional character, Dave, a reasonably normal man who is thrust into a world of death, destruction, weapons development, covert activity and the arms trade for the paramilitary wing of the South African government, Armscor.

The novel is divided into two halves, the first dealing in Dave’s experiences in South Africa and the second focusing on nefarious events in Canada surrounding illegal business dealings. In the book, the author shares intimate details of Dave’s activities and his connections to disturbing events on both continents.

“In the beginning, I drew from my notes and diaries and started writing point form, this provided a basis for the story and a time line for the events in the book. Personally, it was disturbing, forcing myself to remember, almost relive, everything I have seen and done.”

Meckanic sets the background of the story in the first chapter. He explains the normal loving family relationship between Dave and his wife, how they are the average couple with an adopted daughter, struggling to survive and remain in control of their futures in Canada.

Their lives however, radically and rapidly change, when Dave loses a great deal of money to a research company in a badly engineered government program. Feeling broken, Dave decides on a change of scenery and he and his young family move to South Africa..

Once in South Africa, Dave was steered into an Armscor related military contractor to design defensive weapons systems against Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and to integrate South Africa’s security. His focus was quickly changed to special weapons programs involving lasers and fissile materials, for use in the war in Angola.

Dave’s life was no longer his own, he was a military asset. He understood his position and it was simple, we killed terrorists, the self-described freedom-fighters who would breach the borders and slaughter innocent people. But when Armscor went renegade and killed ‘innocents,’ it started becoming too much for Dave to handle.

“The SAA Helderberg airliner crash in November of 1987, was the first major problem for me, it shocked and disgusted me and showed me a shift in Armscor’s direction. Of course this happened during the arms embargo. When the plane was taken out, that told me I wasn’t working for the military any longer, I was working for something evil.”

Then it became even worse. In a covert meeting at Kruger National Park in 1988, while the CIA was stroking Saddam, ambassadors, ministers, officers and businessmen were inking a deal to sell Iraq hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons for the invasion of Kuwait.

“When I saw the stack of paperwork, I had a hard time believing what I was seeing… and the weapons, they weren’t obsolete, the US forces had much better. It was bad enough knowing details concerning the Helderberg, but now I was associating with arms dealers, that had to stop.”

Eventually, Dave did break away from Armscor, but not without cost. When he finally decided to leave South Africa, it was another roller coaster, except this ride was coming off the tracks.

“Don’t ever ask for help from the Canadian Embassy, if you do and you’re in a dicey situation, expect that you have made a terminal decision and that you and your family could wind up dead, of course that’s just my experience and my opinion.”

Once back in Canada, Dave’s life normalizes, at least until he falls into another rather nasty business deal involving government ministers, universities, the stock market and the private sector. His business partners start a war of attrition to force Dave out of the company because a mistake has been made. A huge mistake that could have them all owing tens of millions of dollars in taxes. A settlement comes after a month of legal battles, but the settlement is breached less than a year later.

Eventually, after three years of legal battles, a judgement is handed down by a judge who doesn’t want to hear the truth of what has transpired. The final settlement is released at two cents on the dollar alongside permanent injunctions for all parties.

“I’ve seen and done a great number of things in my life and I’ve dealt with a lot of people. But to be honest, when I think about my experiences in Canada and some of the people involved, I place them directly alongside the type of people responsible for the Helderberg and the Iraqi Arms deals. I’ve seen evil, up close and personal, I’m sure I’ll see it again and it can be black or white, thick or thin, short pudgy and bald or almost any physical appearance you can dream up.”

Meckanic’s book has received enthusiastic local and overseas response. The controversy surrounding many of the events contained within the novel are still being discussed feverishly at times on a number of Internet forums, focus groups and sites.

“With Malice And Forethought” is available to readers from Amazon.com, Alibris.com other online booksellers and from bookstore chains. It is available to the book trade directly from Booksurge.com and through other book wholesalers.
